Free Diving

One of the most impressive and appealing people I've met in my life was an underwater camera man called Joseph. He, a lovely kind hearted Frenchman, glided straight through the water camera in hand, goggles on his face, wet suit tugging at his slim figure, but he had no air tank, no snorkel, just his lungs. And with just that he was able to stay under that water for what seemed like hours.

Of procedure it was just minutes, 5 or 6 minutes to be a dinky more accurate. A truly appealing feet to watch a human being do something that until you contemplate it you would swear is beyond a humans capacity. I mean the guy could blow air rings for gods sake. (Like smoke rings but rings of air under water) And with this the world of free-diving was opened up to me.

Underwater Pictures

Now free-diving is not a new invention, in fact it is obviously the oldest form of human under water exploration. Before the invention of an breathing apparatus sea side cultures finding to feed themselves would have spear fisherman swimming to great depths and to even greater time limits to spear their food.

Cuttlefish attacks octopus

Cuttlefish attacks octopus Tube. Duration : 1.07 Mins.

While working under water an octopus took my spanner. Then we both get a surprise! It was taken by me when I was servicing the Current Meter sonar which is located in 21 metres of water off Port Kembla Harbour, NSW. The reason you can here my voice is that I was wearing a full face mask with hard wired communications to the surface. The camera picked up my reaction. The fuzzy reply is the surface crew replying. I was undoing the bolts on the Current Meter housing for routine servicing, when the octopus crept out of the housing, and demanded to have my spanner. I am sure the cuttlefish must have been biding his time on this octopus. But the octopus could not resist my spanner, it made repeated attempts to steal it as I tried to undo the bolts. This game of taking my spanner went on for several minutes. Eventually I gave up on the bolts and took out my camera, which I had with me to record the condition of the Current Meter. I thought it was interesting so I took some photos. Then I decided to switch the camera to video mode. I was totally unaware of the cuttlefish, which I thought was just a piece of seaweed. I got a big shock when the cuttlefish struck. The shock in my voice is my genuine reaction. Each year from April to June the cuttlefish off Sydney become extremely aggressive. They often follow divers and sometimes attack them. But they love octopus. I had a repeat experience last year in May, when I again had an octopus come out of its lair to try and take a shiny ...

Nessie - The Loch Ness Monster Legend

The Loch Ness Monster first made its "appearance" in 565 in St Columba's biography, but it was more up-to-date times that brought the legend to life. It has been 75 years since the first photographic "proof" of Nessie appeared. Since then, thousands of photos and stories have emerged.

Although there were any reports of sightings before then, the first picture was taken by Hugh Gray in November 1933. Although grainy and misty, the photo shows something in the loch. There are many speculations as to what the photo is actual of.

Underwater Pictures

People from all over the world wanted to get a espy of the creature, some thought about to capture it. There have been numerous expeditions into the loch in quest of evidence. In the 1960s, a ten year analysis was made. Sonar studies in 1968 found complicated large animate objects, but were unable to identify them. An expedition in 1987 reported any unidentified spirited objects. There have also been strange sound recordings.

Constant hoaxes make it difficult to prove the existence or non-existence of Nessie. Many photographs have been altered to gift a monster. One of the most famed is known as the "surgeon's photo", which presents a plesiosaur-like creature. (Plesiosaurs were long necked water dinosaurs believed to be extinct for any million years). This photo seemed to be legitimate evidence for approximately 30 years, until revealed as a fake in 1994. Many other photos have been explained as birds, otters, deer, seals, and more.

The possibility of the Loch Ness Monster increased due to the up-to-date discovery of a coelacanth fish that was believed to be extinct hundreds of millions of years ago. The discovery of "Nessie's Lair", a large underwater cavern, has added to the possibility suggesting there could be a network of caves for such a creature to hide in.

You can settle for yourself whether you believe or not, but the legend continues to grow.

How to characterize a picture

Whether you are reviewing one of your own photographs or some one else's, there are definite rules of thumb that should be followed. The steps below offer a step by step advent to reviewing photographs and maybe offering advice.

1. Categorize the piece to a singular type: portrait, landscape, nature, wildlife, action...etc. Yes there is a unlikeness between nature and wildlife photography. The point is to narrow it down to a definite type. There are distinct expectations for distinct types.

Underwater Pictures

2. Was lighting used effectively? distinct lighting techniques are used for distinct types of photography. Is the shot too dark? Is there washout (whites are too bright)? Was indirect lighting used if it was a portrait? Direct lighting on portraits can flatten facial features.

3. Settle what the field of the photograph is. Viewers should not have to guess what the field is. If the field is not clear then there is not much point in going very deep in the review.

4. Notice the techniques that were used to bring out the subject. Was a narrow depth of field used to blur the background and foreground while holding the field in focus? Was the field thoughprovoking while the shot? Were techniques used to show motion?

There are many techniques that can be used to bring attention to the subject. Are any singular techniques noticeable? Should a distinct technique have been used?

5. See if there is whatever in the shot that unnecessarily distracts from the subject. Is there something in the background that draws your eye away from the subject? Photographers should make sure that there are no distractions in the viewfinder before releasing the shutter.

6. The final step in reviewing a photo is to design a personal opinion. Do you like the picture? Why or why not? If it is your shot, what should you do differently next time... If anything? If it is someone else's, would you have taken a distinct approach?

If someone wants you to narrate their photograph, do so. Give them your honest opinion, with constructive commentary if necessary.

The more photographs that you narrate the great ready you will be for distinct photographic opportunities.

Creative Shoebox Diorama Ideas For the School Season

Shoebox Dioramas are a part of every school year and in just about every grade they serve as a breathtaking studying tool. They are used to learn the arts and crafts of production things and they are used to also learn about subjects. This narrative shows you some creative ideas from both the arts and crafts aspect and the studying aspect.

The Arts and Crafts of Shoebox Dioramas

There are a lot of common ways to make a shoebox diorama and they contain tape, glue, construction paper and all the regular assortment of arts and crafts stuff but there are a few things you can do to make a diorama just a small bit special. Here is a list of ideas:

Underwater Pictures

  • If you are doing an underwater scene you can cover the front of the box with Saran Wrap or thin plastic. This gives the diorama an underwater feel
  • Use string to use the full three dimensions inside the box; suspend objects from strings or tie strings from side to side and top to bottom and attach objects to the strings. This works well for flying objects like bird, pterodactyls or even clouds and stars.
  • Cut slots in the back and top of the box and use this to insert objects that you can move across the diorama. Make a bird, boat, comet or some other type of attractive object then attach a tab to the back of it. Insert this tab in the slot then you can grab the tab from the back and slide the object across the diorama. This adds a nice small interactive element. This works well with all kinds of things from a rising sun, flying bird, erupting volcano or just about whatever else that would move.
  • Think surface the shoebox! There is no need to run out and buy a new pair of shoes if you don't have a shoebox. A more than sufficient box can be made from scraps of cardboard or even a few cereal boxes cut and taped together. And there is no need to make a typical shoebox shape. Be creative in the shape you make. It adds a size of interest to the project. Half round, amphitheatre shapes are generally used for dioramas and look great.
  • Achieving Depth - The most common trait of an mean shoebox diorama is that it has a decorated background and objects located on the bottom surface.  You can add an attractive touch by decorating a strip of paper that is about two inches wide with a foliage pattern then attach this to the inside bottom of the diorama about an inch from the back wall - it reaches all the way from the left side to the right side. This adds a lot of depth and makes it look much more interesting.
  • Using alternate materials - You don't have to use cardboard or boxes. As an example, if you are doing a polar bear or penguin diorama you could use white packing Styrofoam.  If you are doing a desert scene you can apply glue to the bottom of the diorama and sprinkle real sand on it.

Theme Ideas and studying Tools

The biggest point of a shoebox diorama is to show a natural habitat of something. In the process of drawing and cutting out the varied objects a child is studying about the habitat. This is great but you can take it to new levels with a small thought and a small creativity.

  • Freezing a occasion in time - A diorama is a occasion in time and you can focus on this. Some good examples are you can have a meteor streaking across the sky of a dinosaur diorama; this explains a theory of extinction. Or you can show a large predator fish about to eat a smaller fish as it is eating something even smaller. This dramatic occasion in time is a good display of the food chain.
  • Interactions in a habitat - The focus of a diorama is often to correctly identify and place the right objects for a natural habitat but you can take this to a new level by focusing on the interactions within the habitat. The upper layer of canopy in a rainforest blocks out sunlight from the lower layers and this is an leading aspect of the rainforest. A coral reef provides shelter for many creatures in the sea and a diorama can display this.
  • Adding a Fact Sheet - This is a great tool that should be added to every diorama. You should make a fact sheet that can be glued to poster board and stood up near the diorama. The sheet explains the basic facts of what the diorama is about.

Diorama Ideas

Here are some ideas you can use as a theme for your diorama:

  • The Natural Habitat of just about any creature like fish, polar bears, black bears, penguins, wolves, humans, dinosaurs, camels, lions, tigers, monkeys, elephants, dolphins, and well you get the idea!
  • A Desert theme complete with pyramids, mummies and camels is fun
  • A Rainforest is a good diorama for teaching about diversity and the interaction of species
  • An astronomy diorama complete with sun, planets, comets, and stars in the background
  • A medieval Castle scene complete with catapult or dragon
  • Underwater scenes are all the time popular
  • Arctic themed dioramas are fun because of the creative options for snow and icebergs

Whatever diorama you pick to make you should take a small time to make it separate and unique and there are lots of creative ways to do that. Have fun with your project!

How To Build Your Own Home Made Gold Dredge

No request that many folks curious in prospecting for gold would love to own a dredge. No request that dredges are very cool pieces of prospecting equipment, but the prices for new ones are unquestionably high. You could unquestionably spend many thousands of dollars on such a purchase, and that is more than many can afford. Don't forget however, that in the earliest days of dredging, there were no manufacturers, and all small suction gold dredges were handmade units made in someone's garage. There's no doubt that a good dredge can be built by the home craftsman, and I know you can save some valuable money doing it, because I've done it myself.

For those who might ask, a suction gold dredge is basically a gismo which is designed to suck gravel underwater from the bottom of a river, pull it up through a hose and run it over a sluice box. In the sluice box, any gold which is present becomes trapped and the lighter materials such as sand and gravel move down and out of the sluice box and back into the river. The operator guides to the nozzle of the hose to suck the rocks and gravel which he desires to process off the river bottom. A small "lawn mower" type of machine is used to pump water which creates the suction that pulls the sand and gravel up through a hose and into the sluice box. The gravel does not go through the pump, the suction in the hose is unquestionably created through a Venturi succeed by pumping high pressure water through a jet. The fast-moving water creates the suction in the jet. This way the sand and gravel does not unquestionably go through the pump, which would fast wear it down.

Underwater Pictures

In expanding to pumping water, the small machine also produces compressed air for the diver to use while working underwater. In cases where the water is shallow, the gold diver may plainly use a snorkel.

Most modern dredges are made to float on the outside of the water, allowing the operator the most level of flexibility to move from place to place while working small gold deposits. Most flotation systems are made of rigid plastic pontoons, but there are still a amount of units in use that hire other flotation systems such as truck inner tubes.

Building a dredge is a big project with a lot of plans and decisions to be made. Take your time and think about what you unquestionably want to build. Think about what materials you have on hand or what you could unquestionably acquire, then build a list of what you need to build your dredge.

Unfortunately, a straightforward set of dredge plans that would work for all sizes of suction dredges is just impossible, so I've not tried to prepare any such thing. However, you can do it for your project. If you unquestionably sit down and think about things, and use measurements taken from the commercial dredge makers you can build your own set of plans for your exact dredge project.

Of policy you will be construction on the cheap, but you don't want to shortchange yourself too much. You don't want your dredge to be rickety, or to fall apart, or to fail to function. Dredges need to be functional, durable and sturdy. The time you spend sorting through build concepts, deciding what you will build and how you will build it will be well spent. Think about what you want and what you need then weigh those together with what you can afford. Do up some drawings and lists. perhaps the best thing I can suggest is that you study the designs of the well-known dredge makers like Keene and Pro-line. These manufacturers have done quite a bit of investigate studying their products, they have tested separate options and have industrialized productive pieces of equipment that do the job well. Check out their web sites as most have good photos of their dredges and the private components that make up these dredges - you can get a lot of information from their web sites.

If your local prospecting shop has a dredge set up, take a close look and even measurements or photos if you can. Someone else great possibility is to join a prospecting club whose members actively dredge, and then go out to the claims and check out the members while they are dredging. Take some pictures of the dredges while they're in operation. The club members may even let you have a few minutes behind the nozzle so that you can get a feel for the whole experience. The more normal knowledge you have about dredges before you begin your design, the better your construction plans will be.

I have found that the junk yard / recycling yard can furnish some important pieces that you may use at low prices. I suggest that one you have good plans for the dredge you want to build, take your purchase list and go look through the local scrap yards - you can get stuff there a whole lot economy than you would at someplace like Home Depot. You may even find a suitable used machine there.
I suggest that once you have assembled all the pieces you need, the next step is to put your new dredge all together and test it. I suggest that you test it with a integrate dozen pieces of small lead shot. Flatten them, and paint them red or some other curious color. Then suck up some gravel from the nearest gold bearing stream and put the shot in with the gravel you are processing. Be sure to take in a good bit of gravel both before and after you've sucked up the shot. When you clean up the sluice, count how many of the shot you have recovered and compare that to the amount you started with. You should not lose more than one or two at the most. If you lose more than three or four you need to adjust your dredge or make some changes to improve it so you can be inevitable you are not losing gold.
