History of the Camera

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were able to task images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took many more years. Up until the 17th century, scientists believed that light was composed basically of the 'white' that is perceived by the human eye. It took the explore done by supreme physicist Isaac Newton to seek that light is de facto composed of a spectrum of colors. While he made a big gift to the study of optics (that is at the core of camera advances) with this discovery, Newton did not de facto have anything to do with camera improvement per se.

The early camera that first became a phenomenon was a slight more than a pinhole camera and can be traced back to 1558. It was called the Camera Obscura. In other words the artist gets to view a superimposed image of a branch on paper and this image could be effectively used to effort to draw, trace or paint it. Both the Camera Obscura and the Camera Lucida provided an image that was temporary, which could not be lastingly captured on to paper for later reference.

Underwater Pictures

Studies any way prolonged well into the 1800's on how to de facto capture the image onto material. It was during this time, nearby 1822 that French researcher Joseph Nicephore Niepce, created the first photograph by using paper that was coated with a chemical. The image would not stay enduringly on the paper and would disappear after a short while. Capturing images to preserve them longer and enduringly became the next big quest for researchers. an additional one Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre partnered with Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1829, to build the process of creating permanent photographs. Joseph Niépce died in 1833 but Daguerre prolonged with the work and succeeded in 1837 after many long years of experimentation. The process of capturing photographic images that would not fade away, introduced by Daguerre came to be known as the 'daguerreotype'.

The word 'photography' was coined by scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel in 1839 and it is de facto is derived from two Greek words 'photos' meaning light and 'graphein' meaning draw.

A slightly more industrialized version of the daguerreotype called the Calotype process that makes multiple copies inherent using the negative and clear formula became ready very soon after. In fact, it was during the 1840's that the use of photographic images in advertisements first started and cameras made their mark on the power of optical communication. It was not much later, in the 1850's that photographers first started experimenting with underwater photography of seascapes.

Up until 1850, the process of capturing images was cumbersome requiring upto half an hour of light exposure. The discovery made in 1851 by Frederick Scott Archer was a blessing since the new formula termed the Collodion process called for just 2-3 seconds of light exposure to capture an image.

Prior to 1871, photographers went through a improvement process where they had to coat the plate with wet chemical each and every time and process the image immediately. With the invention the gelatin dry plate silver bromide process by Richard Leach Maddox, negatives did not have to be industrialized immediately. This was an important discovery since up until then the captured image had to be processed instantly.

Kodak created in 1888 by George Eastman has been a modern day pioneer of sorts in cameras and photography for the masses. George Eastman and the scientists who worked with him at Kodak industrialized the photographic film in 1889 and made it ready in rolls for the mass use of consumers. An important milestone in our entertainment and transportation history was the improvement of transparent roll film by Eastman. This improvement led to an additional one key invention - the petition photograph camera by Thomas Edison's in 1891.

During the 20th century the pace of technology improvement in cameras and photography prolonged at an accelerated pace much like many other key technology developments. While several key inventions like car, telephone and the gramophone record happened in the later half of the 19th century, it is the last 100 years that saw major developmental work in many areas of communications technology and as well as in other fields - Tv, aircrafts, Pcs, digital technology, digital cameras, mobile phones, fax machines and the internet, to name a few.

The first mass use camera became ready at the turn of the 20th century and can be traced back to the year 1900. There are hundreds of models of cameras ready today both for the amateur as well as the expert and the camera is an important part of any family's repertoire of must have gadgets.

1913: 35 mm still-camera created

1927: The flash bulb introduced by normal galvanic Co. (The thought of camera flash existed much before but was based on the use of a flash light powder that was invented by German researchers)

1935- 1941: Kodak starts marketing Kodachrome film and subsequently launches Kodacolor negative film. Canon released the Hansa Canon in 1936, the first 35mm focal-plane shutter camera.

1948: The thought of the Polaroid camera is introduced in the market. American scientist Edwin Land industrialized the process for instant photography. Later Polaroid Corporation industrialized the 'instant color' film nearby 1963.

1957: Frenchman Jaques Yves Cousteau invented the first waterproof 35mm camera for underwater photography named the Calypso Phot. The actual camera was industrialized by the Belgian airplane technical designer Jean de Wouters based on the blueprint and suggestions given to him by Cousteau.

1972: The electronic camera that does not want film was created and patented by Texas Instruments. This is any way not the same as a digital camera though you don't want film in digital cameras as well. The begin of the digital camera is still many years away.

1975: Kodak's experiments with digital imaging kicked off nearby the mid seventies but it will take an additional one 20 years before a digital camera for the home buyer shop is launched.

1978 - 1980: Asian players like Konica and Sony begin to make their mark. The 'point and shoot' self-operating focus camera is launched by Konica while Sony starts talking about the camcorder and demonstrates a prototype.

1981: Sony launches a commercially ready electronic still camera. Similar to the 1972 invention by Texas Instruments, the Sony electronic camera came with a mini disc on which images were recorded and stored. The recorded images could be later printed or viewed on a monitor using a reader device.

1986: The camera manufactures becomes even more buyer focused and taps the fun and voyage connotations behind camera usage, with the begin of the thought of the disposable particular use cameras. Fuji is credited with the improvement of this concept.

Also in 1986 - 1987, Kodak started taking giant strides in digital development. Digital means, the photographic image is divided into tiny units of dots or squares known as pixels. Pixels are the programmable units of an image that can be processed by computers. Each image could be made up of millions of pixels. The use of pixels in digital technology allows storing large volumes of pixels to deliver high definition print quality.

1990: Kodak introduces Photo Cd's. It is a system of storing photographic images on Cd and then viewing them on a computer. With this improvement the user-friendly approach of the camera manufactures began to take concrete shape.

1991: Kodak introduces a digital camera targeted at professionals and journalists. Kodak is credited with the invention of a pixel based camera technology known to us as the digital camera. Digital cameras don't use film similar to their predecessor electronic cameras but the storehouse formula is entirely different and the final photograph is of much higher resolution. In a digital camera photos are recorded and stored in digital form. This digital data can be transferred to a computer and processed for printing. Kodak and Canon are well known digital camera manufacturers and there are also several other key brands as well.

1994: The Apple QuickTake camera, a home use digital camera is launched. This is followed by the begin of a clutch of home use digital cameras by Casio, Kodak and others in quick succession during 1995 -'96.

Tulsa Story :This is a video pictorial of the 1957 Plymouth Belvedere that was buried in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 15, 1957 as a time capsule. It was uncovered 50 years later on June 15, 2007. I was hoping to see a pristine version of "Miss Belvedere", but as it turned out, the vault leaked and filled with water, causing much damage to the automobile. As a car enthusiast, I watched the story develop over the past few years. I waited and watched it live online as she was extracted from the ground. When I saw the rust-colored dirt and muck on her, I had a bad feeling about her condition. I wish the person who won this car (by guessing the closest to the town's actual 2007 population back in 1957) could have it restored, but that would be a massive undertaking. On the other hand, she should get a chance to dance again! BIONICLE movie project: The Last Escape from the Pit

Folks of the world, it seems I am done with this piece. Or, at least, reached a phase that can be shared. This is my "other project" that I've hinted at so many times, probably unnoticed by mostly everyone. Unbelievable, but it took me more than half a year to make! I shot the first pictures on January 23! And even so, it's more of a test, rather than a full-fledged short movie. I originally wanted to make a stop-motion short that depicts a canon event from the Bionicle storyline, but it turned out it would be really hard to find suitable backgrounds and make it look underwater-y. So, since I don't have any functioning softwares specifically designed for animation, I turned to Sony Vegas and it's keyframing abilities. It worked, and so the animation was born. I am aware of the fact that it looks awfully crude at places, and that the animation models could have been tweaked as well. I also know there is inconsistency between the short stop-motion sequences and the keyframe animation, as well as the appearance of the characters themselves between shots. Especially the coloration pf their body parts! But this was just my first attempt at the method, so expect my future projects (if there will ever be any) to look more polished. For one, I'm not planning to use any more set photos for the characters. The voices could use more work too. I had to use my voice for all the characters (even the Gadunka and the red beast), and my acting abilities are far from good. Still, I ...

3. Built-in flashes are evil. Do you have a bunch of backscatter in your shots ruining that otherwise exquisite picture? The culprit is that built-in flash. On compact digital cameras the flash is located so close to the lens that it illuminates any particles that are in the water, and then your camera records all that backscatter at 10+ megapixels! How do you avoid this? There are a combine of options. You can whether stay shallow and shoot with ambient light (no flash) and a color correcting filter, or you can get an external strobe and angle it at about 45 degrees above and to the side of your branch so those particles in the water are illuminated from the side, not the front. You may need to do a dinky creative engineering to sync your strobe to your camera. You will also need to cover or deflect the built-in flash so it does not work on your shot. If your housing does not come with an attachment to cover or deflect the built-in flash, duct tape also works great for this purpose.

4. Get close. You think you're close to your subject? You probably need to be closer. Three feet or less is ideal. Why? You need to be close because water absorbs light. You already know this from your quarterly diving - as you descend through the water column, the water absorbs the reds and oranges from the ambient light, and you are left with cooler colors, such as blue. Well, the same principle applies horizontally through the water. The light from your strobe has to trip to the subject, illuminate it, and then trip back to your camera lens. If you are more than a few feet away from your subject, the light is plainly absorbed, and that strobe is just as good as dragging dead weight around. Also keep in mind the result of refraction. Water makes an object appear 33% larger and 25% closer (4:3 ratio), so what appears to be three feet away is admittedly four feet away. Unfortunately strobes don't care about refraction, so you have to get a dinky closer than you think in order to properly illuminate your subject.

5. Think about composition. Fish tails do not make for inviting photos, even if it is the tail of the rarest fish on Earth. Shoot at upward angles, rather than finding down on your subject...and stop chasing those fish! result the Rule of Thirds for visually pleasing photographs.

6. Stay off the bottom! Buoyancy is key in diving, especially when taking underwater photos. By maintaining neutral buoyancy, you will avoid stirring up sand or silt in the water column, thereby keeping the water as clear as potential and helping to minimize backscatter issues. You also won't be labeled as "one of those" photographers who plants themselves on the reef, damaging coral and disturbing reef creatures, while trying to get the exquisite shot. No picture is worth damaging our beautiful and fragile reefs and wrecks.

I hope these tips help. These are just some of the practices I have followed over ten years of underwater photography. I've used both compact digital cameras and digital Slrs, and have gotten very nice results with both. Remember, the only way to get good at underwater photography is to take underwater photographs. And take lots of them! custom taking photos on land. Get to know the features, functions, (and limitations) of your camera, and you will find that underwater photography can be highly rewarding!

Using a underwater casing can turn your traditional camera into one piece of equipment that can withstand the heavy pressure underwater.

Here are some tips for you when shooting pictures underwater:

Take into observation of the light factor, the deeper you submerge and dive the less light you'll be getting. Therefore the images will be much darker and rarely you'll get pretty pictures out of it. To avoid this, you can use white balance to compensate it, it will furnish the much needed light and therefore giving your a more natural color even when you're deep down.

Also instead of using a built-in flash, you want to think using external flash, as the built in one will most likely come out blurry and you'll be finding a lot of white particles. An external flash will first flash the area before it captures, which is the dissimilarity between an built in one.

Another tip to ensure that your camera is all the time in good shape is to make sure you use fresh water to wash off those salt water after every trip, salt water is notorious and can fast deteriorate the devices.
